The Arundel Estate is a set of rectangular buildings whose relationship to the historic townscape context is negative. Lying on Aldwych, they profoundly affect the setting of the Grade I listed St Clement Danes Church and the Temple Inns of Court. Reconfiguring the floor space while breaking down the scale and bulk, was a major challenge.
The consultancy worked closely with KPF Architects to explore solutions to this urban design and architectural problem. The solution, illustrated here, reduces the apparent height and scale while improving the qualities of the floor space. The new building embraces the setting of the church by reforming a curved street wall, as was historically the case. The consultancy provided the analysis of the existing environment and the effect of the proposal on it in a townscape report. It also monitored the evolving design, while supporting the architects at workshops with and without Westminster’s planning officers.
