The consultancy supported the winning team in competition consisting of developer Londonewcastle and architect Studio Egret West. In providing heritage expertise, it established a hierarchy of heritage significances which enabled a dialogue with Tower Hamlets and Historic England for a fundamental overhaul of the structure, its interiors, fenestration and landscaping.
The team re-established the lost cornice, returned the flues to their original form and restored concrete surfaces. The change from white painted timber windows to grey powder coated aluminium was very controversial with the Twentieth Century Society, but this, we successfully argued, made sense when all circumstances were taken into account.
Approval was given in 2015 and construction was completed in spring 2020. The consultancy subsequently drafted a listed building management agreement between the owner, Historic England and Tower Hamlets.
