The project for the new Peninsula Hotel at Hyde Park Corner, designed by Hopkins Architects for Grosvenor Estate and The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels, was submitted to Westminster City Council in July 2015 and approved in December 2015.
The brief was to help secure a very large building in one of the most coherent architectural character areas in London, surrounded by a large number of highly sensitive heritage assets, including Apsley House and the Wellington Arch by the replacement of two non-compliant post-war office buildings.
Our involvement included design collaboration with the architects to achieve an architectural composition with classical derivations in modern authentic construction, with a base, middle and top, so well-conceived as to be prevented from a reductive planning process. This we achieved.
The consultancy carried out the assessment of its effects on the surrounding heritage and on important townscape views, including along Piccadilly, from Buckingham Palace and from Hyde Park. The building should be completed in 2021.
